bolt Quick Answer

Van Thats Quick runs one item, one driver, nothing else in the van, collected today. Outside the M25 it is £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum that covers the first 50 miles — so Oxford or Guildford is £105, Birmingham £238, Manchester £380 and Edinburgh £760. Within the M25 a single item is £55. The empty return leg is inside the rate and there is no fuel surcharge. A van load — a studio, a one-bed, a student room — is a fixed day rate with two movers: from £450 to the Midlands, from £600 to the North.

Long distance here means anything that leaves the M25. It splits into two jobs with two different prices. One item — a sofa, a bed, a fridge, a machine part, a crated bike, a desk — travels on a dedicated same-day run: one driver, one van, your thing and nothing else, priced at £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum. A van load — a student room, a studio, a one-bed, a part-load of boxes and furniture — is a fixed day rate with two movers, from £450 to the Midlands and £600 to the North.

Loaded miles means collection to delivery. You are not charged for the run out to you or the empty leg home — both are already inside the rate — and there is no fuel surcharge waiting at the end. That makes the arithmetic something you can do yourself before you ring: London to Birmingham is 125 miles, so £238; London to Manchester is 200, so £380. Anything under about 50 miles lands on the £95 minimum, and anything inside the M25 is the local single-item price of £55.

We are based at Uxbridge (UB8) and Chalfont St Peter, on the M25/M40 corner, so the motorway network north, west and south starts about four minutes from the yard. Same-day is the product, not an extra: we collect today, usually within two hours of your call where the diary allows, and deliver today up to about 200 loaded miles. Beyond that it is an overnight at the same per-mile rate, delivered next morning. Send a photo and two postcodes for a fixed number — the full price list has everything else we do.

How long-distance pricing works here

Two ladders. Which one you are on depends only on whether the van is carrying your item or your household.

  • Within the M25, £55. One item, any London borough to any other, carried in rather than left at the kerb.
  • Outside the M25, £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum. The minimum covers the first 50 loaded miles, so a short hop out to Oxford, Reading, Guildford or Milton Keynes sits on or near it — 55 miles is £105. Past that the meter is simply the mileage: 120 miles to Bristol, 155 to Cardiff, 200 to Manchester. Multiply and you have the price.
  • A van load, fixed day rate by band. From £450 to the Midlands, Bristol and Cardiff band, from £600 to the Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool band, both with two movers. Brighton, Scotland and the far South-West are quoted per job because they are a different day shape, and we would rather give you a real number than squeeze you into a band that does not fit.

The add-ons are short and published. A second item from the same pickup going to the same address is £25. A second person for something heavy or awkward — a corner sofa, an American fridge, a wardrobe up three flights — is £45. Waiting is free for the first 20 minutes at each end, then £15 per 15 minutes. The Congestion Charge (£18) is passed through only where an address actually sits inside the zone, and our vans are ULEZ-compliant so there is never a ULEZ line. What genuinely changes a quote is what you did not mention: an extra wardrobe on the landing, a third floor with no lift, or a delivery address a Luton physically cannot reach.

Why the cheap prices online are cheap

Search "long distance courier" and you will find quotes well under ours. They are real prices for a real service — just not this one, and it is worth knowing the difference before you book either.

Almost every cheap headline figure is shared space on a van that is already going that way. A consolidator fills one van with eight or ten jobs and runs it when the van is full and the route makes sense, which is why the quote comes with a multi-day window and a date chosen by the driver rather than by you. Backload auctions work the same way: you are buying capacity that would otherwise travel empty, usually from a remover heading home from a job. Splitting a day's cost between ten customers is exactly why the number is low, and it is genuinely good value if your item can wait.

What you give up is the date, the control and often the lifting. The van goes when it goes. You are dealing with a platform rather than the person driving. The window can be three days wide, and the driver who arrives may quote kerb to kerb, so the sofa gets left on the pavement.

  • Use a shared van if the item is not urgent, you can wait a week or two, and somebody is free at both ends whenever it lands.
  • Use a dedicated van if it has to move today, there is a completion or tenancy date, the seller wants it gone, the item is fragile or expensive, or there are stairs at either end.

We are not going to beat a shared load on price and we will not pretend to. Our van carries one job, so one customer pays for the day — that is the whole of the difference. What you get for it is today, a fixed number before we set off, and the same person loading and unloading.

The routes we run out of London

These are the destinations we go to most often, each with its own page and its own fixed single-item price. Drive times are one way in normal traffic; the mileage is motorway distance from the M25, and the price is that mileage at £1.90 a loaded mile.

  • Birmingham — 125 miles up the M40, about 2 hrs 30, £238. Collected and delivered the same day with room to spare.
  • Manchester — 200 miles on the M40 and M6, about 4 hrs, £380. Booked in the morning it lands the same afternoon.
  • Leeds — 195 miles up the M1, about 4 hrs, £371, with an early start to miss the worst of it.
  • Bristol, Nottingham and Cardiff — 120 to 155 miles, 2 hrs 30 to 3 hrs, £228 to £295.
  • Liverpool — 215 miles, about 4 hrs, £409.
  • Brighton and the south coast — 60 miles, about 1 hr 30, £114. Short enough to collect and deliver inside the same afternoon.
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow — 400 to 410 miles, 7 hrs plus, £760 and £779. Collected today, driven through, delivered next morning.

If your town is not on the list it is almost certainly still covered — anywhere on the UK mainland is, at the same rate. Sheffield, Leicester, Coventry, Northampton, Southampton, Exeter and Newcastle are all regular runs. Give us the two postcodes and the mileage does the rest.

Timing: when we can go and how long it takes

The honest answer to "how soon" is usually today.

  • Collected today. Where the diary has a slot we are with you within about two hours of booking. There is nothing to add for that — a dedicated same-day run is the service, not an upgrade on it.
  • Delivered today up to about 200 loaded miles. Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Cardiff, Leeds and Manchester all fit inside one working day if we load in the morning.
  • Overnight beyond that. Edinburgh and Glasgow at 400-plus miles are collected today, driven through and delivered next morning, at the same per-mile rate. Nothing changes but the clock.
  • A van load is a day. A Midlands run at 2 hrs 30 each way is a comfortable single day; Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool at about 4 hrs each way is a full day and wants an early start. Two hours loading, four driving, ninety minutes unloading is already most of a working day before traffic.
  • Seven days a week, 7am to 10pm, weekends included at the same price.

Two practical things move the timing more than the mileage does. First, the loading window at the London end — a permit bay held for you beats forty minutes circling the block, and waiting past the free 20 minutes is £15 per 15. Second, whether anyone is there to take the delivery at the far end; a wasted trip to a locked door is the one thing that turns a fixed price into a second job. Give us a mobile number for whoever is receiving and the driver will call ahead with an arrival window from the road.

Access at the far end — the thing people forget

The collection address is usually well understood, because you are standing in it. The delivery address, 200 miles away, is often a photo on a letting agent's website. That is where long-distance jobs go wrong, and it costs more to fix at the far end than anywhere else.

  • Can a Luton get to the door? Low bridges, height barriers on new-build car parks, gated student blocks and narrow terraced streets all rule out the big van. Tell us and we will match a LWB or SWB to the load instead.
  • Where does the van stop? If the nearest legal stop is 80 metres away, that is a different job from a driveway. It is still doable — we bring trolleys — it just needs saying first.
  • Stairs and lifts. Third floor with no lift is a two-person job for anything larger than a chest of drawers. A second person is £45, and it is far better booked than discovered.
  • Doorways and turns. Measure the item and measure the tightest doorway or stairwell turn it has to pass. Length, depth and height in centimetres. Adjectives do not fit through doors.
  • Permits. Some councils need a visitor permit or a suspended bay for a van. Worth checking a couple of days ahead at both ends.

Send photos on WhatsApp — the item, the doorway, the street — and we will tell you honestly whether it fits, whether it needs two people, and what that changes about the price, before you commit to anything.

Students, one-bed moves and part-loads

A big share of our long-distance work is not a house move at all. It is one room's worth of things going a long way, usually in September or June.

Student moves. A halls room or a shared-house bedroom — mattress, desk, boxes, bike, a couple of suitcases — fits a small van easily. As a van load it travels at the day rate for the band, so London to Nottingham or Birmingham is from £450 and London to Leeds or Manchester is from £600. If it is genuinely one or two items rather than a room, the per-mile single-item ladder is far cheaper — Nottingham is £247 that way. Our student moves page covers term dates and shared bookings.

One-bed and studio moves. A one-bed flat is normally a single Luton load and a single day to the Midlands, or a full early-start day to the North. Two-bed homes going a long way sometimes want a second day; we will say so when we see the room list, rather than discovering it at 6pm on the motorway. Bigger than that and it is a house removal, quoted separately.

Part-loads. Half a flat — you are taking the bed and the sofa and leaving the rest — is usually priced as a van load, because the van and the day are the cost either way. If the list is genuinely short, ask us to price it both ways and take the lower one: three or four items at the per-mile rate plus £25 an extra item often beats a day rate. See small removals for the local version of the same job.

How the per-mile price is worked out

One item, one driver, nothing else in the van. Distance sets the price; the item only matters if it needs two people to carry it.

What you are paying for The rule Price
One item within the M25 Any London borough to any other, carried in £55
Outside the M25 — minimum Covers the first 50 loaded miles £95
Every loaded mile beyond that Collection to delivery; the empty return leg is inside the rate £1.90 a mile

Worked example — 125 miles Birmingham £238
Worked example — 200 miles Manchester £380
Second item, same pickup Two things from one address to one address add £25
Second person Corner sofas, American fridges, stairs at either end add £45
Waiting time Free for the first 20 minutes at each end, then £15 per 15 min

No fuel surcharge and nothing to add for same-day — collected today is the product. A whole van load is priced as a fixed day rate instead: see the route table below.

Routes out of London: distance, drive time and price

Drive times are one way in normal traffic. The one-item price is the mileage at £1.90 a loaded mile; a van load with two movers follows the distance band.

City Miles Drive time One item Van load
Brighton 60 1 hr 30 £114 fixed quote
Bristol 120 2 hrs 30 £228 from £450
Birmingham 125 2 hrs 30 £238 from £450
Nottingham 130 2 hrs 30 £247 from £450
Cardiff 155 3 hrs £295 from £450
Leeds 195 4 hrs £371 from £600
Manchester 200 4 hrs £380 from £600
Liverpool 215 4 hrs £409 from £600
Edinburgh 400 7 hrs £760 fixed quote
Glasgow 410 7 hrs 30 £779 fixed quote

Mileage is motorway distance from the M25, not from a specific postcode — we price your actual two postcodes. Brighton, Scotland and the far South-West sit outside the published van-load bands, so a van load there is quoted per job rather than banded.

How we compare with other long-distance options

What the same London to Manchester single item costs elsewhere, and what each price actually buys. Cheap headline numbers are shared vans on the driver’s date; ours is one item, today.

Provider Job Published price Dedicated van?
Van Thats Quick One item London → Manchester, collected today £380 Yes — one driver, today, loading included
AMV Couriers (rate card) Dedicated same-day van, per loaded mile Small van £1.20 · SWB £1.50 · LWB £1.80 · XLWB £1.90 · Luton £2.20 (min £45–£125) Yes — same model as ours

Figures read 2026-09-11 from each provider’s published pages. Same-day dedicated couriers price per loaded mile — our £1.90 is the published rate for an extra-long-wheelbase Transit, and we send a Transit or Luton, not a small van. Shared-network prices depend on a driver already passing your route, on their date.

Long Distance — your questions answered

How much is a long-distance man and van from London? expand_more

One item outside the M25 is £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum covering the first 50 miles — so £238 to Birmingham, £380 to Manchester, £760 to Edinburgh. Within the M25 a single item is £55. A van load with two movers is a fixed day rate: from £450 to the Midlands, from £600 to the North. Send both postcodes for a firm figure.

What does "loaded mile" mean? expand_more

The miles your item actually travels — collection address to delivery address. You are not charged for the run out to you or for the empty leg back home; both are already inside the £1.90 rate. It means you can check the price yourself: 200 miles to Manchester at £1.90 is £380, and there is no fuel surcharge added afterwards.

Is this a dedicated van or a shared load? expand_more

Dedicated. Your item is the reason the van is on the road, nothing else is in it, and the driver who loads is the driver who unloads. Nothing is transferred at a depot. That is why our price sits above a consolidator's: their van carries eight or ten jobs on a multi-day window, so the day is split between eight or ten customers. Ours is yours.

Can you collect today? expand_more

Usually yes, and there is nothing extra to pay for it — same-day is the product, not an add-on. Where the diary has a slot we are with you within about two hours of booking. Up to roughly 200 loaded miles we deliver the same day; further than that we collect today and deliver next morning. Ring in the morning rather than at four in the afternoon.

Why is Edinburgh so much more than Birmingham? expand_more

Because it is three times the distance and the rate is per mile: 125 miles to Birmingham is £238, 400 miles to Edinburgh is £760. There is no separate long-distance tier and no surcharge for Scotland — the same £1.90 applies the whole way up, and the overnight delivery costs nothing extra.

How long does London to Manchester take? expand_more

About 4 hours of driving each way, 200 miles via the M40 and M6, so £380 for a single item. Loaded in the morning it is delivered the same afternoon. Leeds is similar at 195 miles up the M1 and Liverpool at 215 miles; Birmingham, at 125 miles and 2 hrs 30, is comfortably a same-day job either way.

Do you cover Scotland? expand_more

Yes, at the same rate: Edinburgh at 400 miles is £760 and Glasgow at 410 is £779 for a single item. It runs as an overnight — collected today, driven through, delivered next morning. A van load that far is quoted per job rather than at a banded day rate, because 400 miles each way is realistically a two-day shape.

Do you help carry, or is it kerb to kerb? expand_more

The driver loads, carries and places. It is not a pallet drop. For anything that genuinely needs two people — a corner sofa, a big American fridge, a wardrobe up three flights — add a second person for £45. Tell us about stairs and lifts when you book so the right number of people turns up.

Can I send two items on the same run? expand_more

Yes. A second item from the same pickup going to the same delivery address is £25 on top of the mileage price, because the van and the day are the same. Beyond three or four bulky things it is usually cheaper as a van load at a day rate, and we will tell you which way round is cheaper for your list rather than defaulting to the dearer one.

What is included in the day rate for a van load? expand_more

Two movers, the drive to you, loading, the motorway run, unloading at the far end, fuel, and the blankets, straps, trolleys and floor protection we bring as standard. There is no mileage charge on top of a banded day rate. The Congestion Charge (£18) is added only when an address actually sits in the zone; the vans are ULEZ-compliant so there is no ULEZ line.

Is it cheaper to use a marketplace like AnyVan or Shiply? expand_more

On headline price, usually. Those are shared-load and backload platforms: you are buying spare space in a van already making the trip, so the date is theirs and the window can be several days wide. If you have time and flexibility that is a fair deal. If it has to go today, or there is a completion date or a seller waiting, a dedicated van is what you actually need. The comparison table above puts both side by side.

Do I need to be at both ends? expand_more

Someone does, but it does not have to be you. Plenty of jobs are loaded by one person in London and received by someone else at the far end. Give us a mobile number for whoever is taking delivery and the driver will call ahead with an arrival window from the road. Waiting is free for the first 20 minutes at each end, then £15 per 15 minutes.

Are you insured for long-distance work? expand_more

Ask us for the current insurance certificate, cover limits and exclusions that apply to your job before you book, and we will send them over. We would rather you read the paperwork than take a slogan on trust, particularly on a job where your things are 200 miles from home.

How do I get a firm quote? expand_more

Send a photo or two of the item, or a quick video walk round the rooms, plus the collection and delivery postcodes and any stairs, lifts or parking issues. We reply with one all-in figure and a collection time. Nothing on a long-distance job is charged by the hour, so the number you are given before we set off is the number you pay.
