How paintings actually get damaged in transit
A framed canvas is a drum. Anything pressing on the back of it — a strap, a corner of a box, someone's knee while lifting — transfers straight to the paint surface, and on an older work with a brittle varnish that shows up as a crack rather than a mark. So the rule is that nothing touches the face or the back, the piece travels vertically on its edge, and it is secured against a padded surface rather than wedged.
The second problem is climate. Rapid changes in temperature and humidity make panels and stretcher bars move, and a van that has been standing in the sun is a bad environment for anything on wood. For a short local transfer that is a small risk worth naming; for a valuable work going a long distance, a specialist fine-art carrier with a climate-controlled vehicle is the honest recommendation, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
