Antique and fine furniture moving

Antiques and fine furniture demand a gentler, more considered move than everyday belongings — one knock or careless lift can undo decades or centuries of value. Our antique moving service brings a two-person crew, proper padding and blankets, and an unhurried, careful approach to moving delicate and valuable pieces across London: chests and cabinets, dressers and dining tables, mirrors, clocks, display cabinets and inherited heirlooms.

We wrap each piece individually, pad corners and vulnerable joints, and secure everything in the van so nothing shifts or rubs against another item in transit. Our crew plan the route out of your property in advance, take doors off where that avoids a scrape, and move at the pace the piece deserves rather than rushing. Whether you are relocating a collection between homes, delivering an auction or dealer purchase, or moving a single treasured piece, it gets individual attention.

Ask us for the current insurance certificate, cover limits and exclusions that apply to your job before you book.

What antique moving covers

  • Delicate and valuable furniture moved individually
  • Chests, cabinets, dressers, tables, mirrors and clocks
  • Individual wrapping, corner and joint padding
  • Careful, unhurried handling with a planned route
  • Between homes, or delivery from auctions and dealers
  • Confirm insurance for goods in transit and public liability

Pricing: Antique moving is charged on our two-mover man and van rate from £95/hr, reflecting the extra care and time involved. We confirm a fixed price once we know the pieces and the access.

Antique Moving Service prices

Antiques run on the two-mover rate. Old furniture needs four hands and a slower pace, and pricing it any other way would be pretending otherwise.

Van and driver
from £65/hr

One mover driving. Fine when you can take one end of the sofa.

Two movers
from £95/hr

For heavy items, stairs, and anything you should not be lifting.

Minimum charge
£95

The smallest job we book, the same across the whole site.

Fixed price
before we load

Confirmed from your photos, or on the day before anything moves.

Ask us to confirm current insurance details, limits and exclusions before booking. For exceptional pieces, a specialist antiques shipper may be the better answer and we will say so.

How it works

1

Photograph the piece

All sides plus close-ups of joints, veneer and any existing damage or previous repairs.

2

Tell us what comes apart

Marble tops, glass shelves, drawers and doors all travel separately. Knowing in advance saves the piece.

3

Fixed price and slot

Agreed before we arrive, with the time the job actually needs rather than an optimistic hour.

4

Blanket-wrapped and secured

Wrapped, carried by two people, and strapped so nothing shifts or rubs on the journey.

Old furniture does not behave like new furniture

A Victorian chest of drawers was built from solid timber with glued joints and no screws, and after a century those joints have dried. Lift it by the top and the carcass racks; lift it by the drawer rail and the rail comes off in your hand. Modern flat-pack is forgiving in ways antique furniture simply is not, and the damage tends to be structural rather than cosmetic.

The practical consequences are dull but they matter: drawers come out and travel separately so the weight is not swinging inside, marble tops come off because they crack across the middle under their own weight, glass and mirrors are removed and wrapped apart, and the piece is lifted from its base by two people. None of that is difficult. It just takes time, and a job priced as a quick single-mover carry does not have that time in it.

  • Drawers out, doors secured. Loose weight inside a carcass on a bumpy road is how joints let go.
  • Marble and glass tops off. They crack across the centre when carried flat and unsupported. They travel separately, on edge.
  • Lift from the base. Never by a drawer rail, a moulding, a handle or a table top.
  • Blanket-wrap, not tape. Tape on old finishes and shellac lifts the surface. Blankets and stretch wrap over the blanket.
  • Woodworm and loose veneer. Tell us if you know about it. Handling changes, and we would rather know than discover it.
  • Know when it needs a specialist. For exceptional or very valuable pieces, a dedicated antiques shipper is the right call and we will tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you protect antique furniture? expand_more

We wrap each piece individually, pad corners and joints, and secure everything separately in the van so pieces cannot rub or shift in transit.

Can you move a single valuable piece? expand_more

Yes. A single treasured or inherited item gets the same individual care as a full collection — just tell us the piece and the access at both ends.

Do you collect from auction houses and dealers? expand_more

Yes. We regularly deliver auction and dealer purchases and can collect on your behalf across London and the surrounding areas.

How much does it cost? expand_more

On our two-mover rate from £95 per hour. The number and fragility of the pieces and the access determine the fixed price we quote.

Are my antiques insured during the move? expand_more

Ask us for the current insurance certificate, cover limits and exclusions that apply to your job before you book.

Do you offer packing for fragile antiques? expand_more

Yes. We can bring materials and wrap delicate pieces, glass and ceramics individually before the move, so everything is protected for transit — just ask when you book.

Why is antique moving charged at the higher rate? expand_more

Because it is genuinely a two-person job at a slower pace. Dismantling, wrapping properly and lifting from the base takes longer than carrying a flat-pack unit out, and pricing it as the cheaper job would just mean rushing it.

Should I take the drawers out? expand_more

Yes, and leave them out for us to carry separately. Weight moving inside a carcass while it is being lifted is the single most common cause of damage to old chests and sideboards.

Can you move a marble-topped table? expand_more

Yes. The top comes off and travels on edge, supported, because marble breaks across the middle when carried flat. The base is wrapped and carried separately.

Are antiques covered by your insurance? expand_more

Ask us to confirm the current certificate, limits and exclusions before booking. High-value antiques are often capped or excluded under standard goods-in-transit cover, so check it against what the piece is actually worth.
