What makes a flat-pack build take longer than the box says
The estimate on the box assumes a clear floor, all the fixings present and someone holding the other end. In a real room the constraints are different: a wardrobe assembled flat has to be stood up, and a 236cm IKEA PAX will not stand up in a room with a 240cm ceiling without catching. Sliding doors need adjusting on the runners until they sit square, and that adjustment is most of the skill in the job.
Two things reliably add time. The first is missing or damaged fixings, which is worth checking the moment the boxes arrive rather than the moment we do. The second is a floor that is not level — an unsupported wardrobe or bookcase on an uneven floor twists, the doors stop closing, and it has to be packed and re-squared. Neither is a disaster if we know, but both are worth mentioning when you book.
- Check the boxes on delivery. Count the fixing packs and check for damage. A missing cam lock stops a build dead.
- Measure your ceiling height. Tall wardrobes are built flat and stood up. That needs the diagonal to clear, not just the height.
- Build in the room it lives in. A finished double wardrobe does not fit through a standard door. It is built where it stands.
- Wall fixing. We can secure tall units to the wall, which matters for anything a child could climb. Tell us the wall type — plasterboard needs different fixings from brick.
- Dismantling too. We take furniture apart as well as build it, which is usually what a move actually needs.
- Packaging taken away. Flat-pack generates an astonishing amount of cardboard. We can take it with us.

How long does a flat-pack wardrobe take to build?
A two-door wardrobe is usually one to two hours. A large sliding-door unit like a PAX is often three to four for two people, because most of the time goes on aligning the doors rather than on the carcass.
Can you fix the furniture to the wall?
Yes, and we recommend it for anything tall. Tell us whether the wall is brick, block or plasterboard when you book so we bring the right fixings — the wrong ones in plasterboard are worse than none.
What if a part is missing from the box?
The build stops at that point, which is why it is worth checking the fixing packs when the boxes arrive. We can usually carry on with everything else and come back, but it is far better to find out before the slot.
Do you dismantle furniture as well?
Yes. Dismantling for a move or for disposal is the same hourly rate, and we can take the dismantled unit away if it is not coming with you.
