The things that actually delay a flat move
Distance is almost never the problem. What costs time in a flat move is the gap between the van and the front door, the stairs, and the building's own rules. A lift that is booked out by another resident, a loading bay that needs a permit nobody applied for, and a concierge who wants a certificate before anyone can use the service lift will each cost more time than driving across London.
Most of it is preventable with two phone calls a week ahead: one to your building manager about lift booking and access hours, and one to the council about parking if there is no bay outside. We will tell you what to ask. It is unglamorous, but it is the difference between a three-hour move and a six-hour one on the same amount of furniture.
- Book the lift. Many blocks require the service lift to be reserved, and some restrict moving hours entirely. Ask the building manager early.
- Parking and permits. If there is no bay outside, a suspension may be needed. Councils typically want several working days' notice.
- Measure the communal doors. Entrance doors and lift openings are often narrower than the flat's own doors — that is where sofas get stuck.
- Say if there is no lift. A third-floor walk-up is a two-mover job. Booking it as one mover to save money simply makes the day longer and costs more.
- Pack before the crew arrives. The hourly clock starts when we do. Boxes sealed and labelled beforehand is the cheapest thing you can do.
