A sofa is the single most awkward thing most people ever buy. It is heavy, it is wide, it has feet that catch, and the whole job usually comes down to one doorway or one turn on a staircase. Van Thats Quick is a dedicated sofa courier: one sofa, one driver, one van, and nothing else in the back. We collect from a retailer, a showroom, a warehouse or a private seller — usually the same day you ring — and carry it into the room you want it in.
The price is set by loaded miles and fixed before we collect. Inside the M25 it is £55, flat, whether the run is three miles or twenty-five. Outside the M25 it is £1.90 for every loaded mile from the collection door to the delivery door, with a £95 minimum that covers the first fifty: Oxford or Guildford about £105, Brighton £114, Bristol £228, Birmingham £238, Manchester £380. A second person, which a corner sofa or a sofa bed almost always needs, adds £45. A local marketplace collection is £45. That is the whole ladder — no fuel surcharge, and nothing charged for the empty leg home.
Why the sofa prices you see online are lower. The big platforms quote shared-van prices: eight or ten jobs in one van, a route built around the driver's week, and a collection window several days wide that can move. If your sofa can wait and someone is in at both ends whenever it lands, that is a fair deal and we will say so. What we sell is the other trade — your sofa is the only thing in the van, it goes today, and the driver who loads it is the one who carries it in.
Before any of that, though, send us the width and the depth. Most sofa jobs are decided by a measurement rather than by a price, and we would far rather tell you at the quote stage that a three-seater will not clear your stairwell than take your money and find out on the day. We are based in Uxbridge (UB8) and Chalfont St Peter, we work seven days from 7am to 10pm, our vans are ULEZ-compliant, and blankets, straps, a trolley and floor protection come as standard.
The measurement that decides it
There is one number that matters and it is not the width of the sofa. It is the narrowest point on the route — usually a doorway, a turn on a staircase, or the diagonal of a lift car. Measure that before anything else.
- The doorway. Measure the opening, not the frame, with the door open. A standard UK internal door is about 762mm (30in); a front door is usually wider. Take the door off its hinges and you often gain another 40–50mm, which is regularly the difference between in and out.
- The sofa on its end. A sofa almost never goes through flat. Turned upright, the measurement that has to clear the doorway is its depth, not its width — so a 210cm three-seater with a 90cm depth is a doorway problem of 90cm, not 210cm.
- The turn. A straight staircase is easy. A half-landing with a 90-degree turn is the classic failure point, because the sofa has to swing through an arc roughly as long as it is. Measure the landing corner to corner.
- The lift. Measure the car door opening and the internal diagonal. A sofa that fits the doorway can still be too long for the box.
- The parking. Not a fit problem, but a time one. A permit bay, a controlled zone or a long carry from the van all cost minutes, and we would rather price them in than surprise you.

Two-seat, three-seat and corner sofas
The price is the same for all of them at a given distance; what changes is whether it needs a second pair of hands. One driver with a trolley and straps handles most two- and three-seat sofas on level or straight-stair access. Beyond that, add £45.
- Two-seat sofa — typically 140–170cm wide and 85–95cm deep. One person, one van, straightforward. Inside the M25 that is £55; out to Brighton it is £114.
- Three-seat sofa — typically 180–215cm wide. Same price, but the length makes a turning staircase much harder, so a second person is worth it above the ground floor.
- Corner sofa or chaise — usually two pieces bolted or clipped together, often 250cm along the longer arm. It nearly always needs two people, and it nearly always needs splitting into its sections. Add £45.
- Sofa bed — the heaviest thing on this list for its size, because of the steel frame and the mattress. Treat it as a two-person job whatever its width.
- Recliners and electric sofas — heavy, and the mechanism is the fragile part. They travel upright and strapped, never on their back.
- Armchairs and footstools — one person, and worth adding to a sofa run rather than booking separately: a second piece from the same pickup is £25.
If you are buying a suite rather than a single sofa, that is a van load at £195 or a two-mover man and van booking at £89 an hour with a 2-hour minimum — and we will say so rather than charging you three single-item prices.
Marketplace and private-seller sofa collection
Most second-hand sofas are listed "collection only" for the obvious reason. A local marketplace collection is £45 — the cheapest job on our list — and it is one of the things we do most. Because the seller usually wants it gone today, so do we: where the diary allows we collect the same day you ring.
- We arrange it with the seller. Give us their name, number and postcode and we will agree a window directly. You do not need to be at the collection end.
- We look before we load. A quick check of the frame, the feet and the fabric, with photographs of anything already marked, so nothing is disputed at the far end.
- Fire labels. A second-hand sofa sold in the UK should still carry its fire-safety label. If it is missing, that is worth knowing before we drive across town for it.
- Ask the seller for the depth. Sellers list a width because that is what the shop listed. The depth is the number that decides your doorway, and most sellers have never measured it.
- Several buys at once. A few pieces from different sellers in the same area is a £195 van load rather than separate jobs.

London to the rest of the UK, by the loaded mile
Outside the M25 a sofa is priced the way every dedicated same-day courier prices: £1.90 for each loaded mile between the collection door and the delivery door, with a £95 minimum. You can check it against a map before you ring. Up to about 200 loaded miles it is collected and delivered the same day; further than that it runs overnight and arrives the next morning.
- Oxford or Guildford, about 55 loaded miles — £105. Brighton, about 60 miles — £114.
- Bristol, about 120 miles — £228. Birmingham, about 125 miles — £238. Nottingham, about 130 miles — £247.
- Leeds, about 195 miles — £371. Manchester, about 200 miles — £380, still same day with an early start.
- Edinburgh, about 400 miles — £760, run overnight for a next-morning delivery rather than pretended to be same-day.
- The same driver at both ends. No depot, no transfer, no handover — the person who loaded your sofa is the person who carries it in, and you have their number.

What happens if it does not fit
Sometimes it does not go in, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Here is exactly how we handle it, in the order we try things.
- Feet off. Most sofa feet unscrew and buy you 8–12cm of height. This alone solves a surprising number of doorways.
- Door off. Lifting an internal door off its hinges typically gains 40–50mm of clear opening, plus the thickness of the door itself out of the swing.
- Back off. Many modern sofas have a bolt-on or clip-on back. Corner units nearly always split into sections. We will take a sofa apart where the manufacturer designed it to come apart — we will not cut a frame.
- Turn it. Upright, on its end, or through on the diagonal. This is where a second person earns the £45.
- Through a window or over a balcony. We do not do this. It needs hoisting equipment and a different kind of insurance, and a specialist is the right answer.
If it truly will not go, we tell you at the collection end wherever possible, before the sofa is in the van and before you have paid for a delivery that cannot happen. If we only find out at the delivery end, we will take it back to the collection address or to a storage address you nominate, and we will charge the job once, not twice. Say up front if the route is tight — a photo of the doorway and the stairs is worth more to us than any description.

Collection today is included, not surcharged. A whole room or a full move is quoted differently — two movers at £89 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, or £340 for a half day and £640 for a full day.

Distances are loaded miles at £1.90 a mile with a £95 minimum — your own route may be shorter or longer than the examples. Add £45 for a second person on anything the driver cannot safely carry alone; above the ground floor with a turning staircase, assume two people.

One sofa anywhere inside the M25 is £55, fixed before we collect. A local collection from a Facebook Marketplace or eBay seller is £45. If the sofa needs two people — a corner unit, a sofa bed or a turning staircase — add £45. Collection today is included rather than surcharged, so long as there is a slot left.
How much does a sofa courier cost outside London?

Do you send one person or two?
One driver as standard, because most two- and three-seat sofas are a one-person job with a trolley and straps on level or straight-stair access. A second person is £45 and is worth it for a corner sofa, a sofa bed, a four-seater, or anything above the ground floor with a turn on the stairs. We would rather you paid for one person than two you do not need.
Can you collect a sofa from a Facebook Marketplace or eBay seller?
Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs at £45 locally. Give us the seller's name, number and postcode and we will agree the collection window directly with them — you do not need to be there. We check the frame and fabric before loading and photograph anything already marked.
Can you deliver a sofa the same day?
That is how the service normally runs. Where the diary allows we collect today, usually within about two hours of your call, and deliver today up to roughly 200 loaded miles — Manchester included, with an early start. Beyond that it is an overnight run at the same per-mile rate. There is no same-day surcharge: inside the M25 it is the ordinary £55.
Why are AnyVan and Shiply cheaper than you?
Because those are shared vans. A driver takes your sofa because it fits a route they are already running with eight or ten other jobs, so the headline is low and the collection window is several days wide and can move. We put one sofa in one van and go today, with the driver's number in your phone. Where you need a specific day, or you need it carried upstairs, that is the difference you are paying for.
Do you take the old sofa away at the same time?
We can, but it is a separate job on a separate ladder, because disposal carries gate fees and upholstered seating has its own rules. Ask when you book and we will price the removal alongside the delivery so both numbers are agreed up front. Doing it on the same visit is almost always cheaper than a second callout.
Will you wrap it, or does it travel bare?
Everything is blanket-wrapped and strapped before it moves, and floor protection goes down at both ends. Recliners and electric sofas travel upright rather than on their back, so the mechanism is not taking the weight. If the sofa comes with its original packaging, tell us and we will keep it on.
Is my sofa insured while you have it?
Ask us for the current insurance certificate, the cover limits and any exclusions that apply to your job before you book, and we will send them over. We would rather you read the paperwork than take a claim on trust.
I am buying a whole suite, not one sofa. What should I book?
A van load at £195 covers a sofa, armchairs and a footstool in one run, which is cheaper than three single-item prices. If it is only one extra piece from the same pickup, that is £25. If it is really a room of furniture, that is a move rather than a courier job — two movers at £89 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, or see small removals.
What areas do you cover for sofa delivery?
All London boroughs on the flat £55 rate, with west London, Hillingdon, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey fastest — we are based in Uxbridge (UB8) and Chalfont St Peter. Beyond that, the whole UK mainland at £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum. Northern Ireland, the islands and anything needing a ferry are quoted separately.
Do you charge extra for the Congestion Charge or ULEZ?
The Congestion Charge (£18) is passed through only where the job actually enters the zone on a charging day — it is not added to every London job. There is never a ULEZ surcharge, because our vans are ULEZ-compliant. Both are stated in the quote before you agree to it.
